On April 19, 2012, at the "Forum for Urbanized Population on an International Scale" held at the Arup Building in London, Cao Wei, senior engineer of Beijing Capital City Commerce&Urban Planning Design Academy, won the Award for Design Excellence of 2012 with his planning work for Tianyuan Xincheng Aiwan Project in Nanshu Town, Laixi, Qingdao, and the design work of a circular building for the aged community. His works were submitted in February, and received high praise at the forum. The project adopted the concept of natural, humanistic, and cultural planning, and the circular building for the aged community took the needs of the aged for social care and mutual assistance into consideration and integrated the low-carbon building concept. He also proposed the idea that “This is not a green and people-friendly city, but also a starting point for a wonderful life” for this project. After the seminar, Ashish Mishra, CEO of the London Asian Strategy Center, and Professor Vlasios Voudouris, Deputy Director of the Centre for International Business and Sustainability at London Metropolitan Business School, presented this year's award to Mr. Cao and his design team at the Barbican Center office in London.
Co-organized by leaders from London Asian Strategy Center, Center for International Business and Sustainability and London Headquarters of ABM Analytics Ltd., this year’s event was themed "Forum for Urbanizing Population on an International Scale", and held at Arup Headquarters Building in London. During the event, experts discussed and exchanged views on the issue of the urbanized population around the world. Ashish Mishra said: "This expert roundtable conveys the greater ambition of us: to build and support consensus, understanding and cooperation between Asia and Europe to ensure that the new Asian century is peaceful, inclusive and standing at the technology frontier.” This event also invited experts from China and the West to offer insights and best practices to explore pressing issues of urban development and their implications for the present and future.
The circular building at the Aiwan Center is the fruit of years of practice and study by Mr. Cao, and it adopted the principles of passive green building design to create a sustainable, safe and inclusive living space.
