As David Cao Wei is a Chinese architect who has won the Award for Design Excellence in Italy in 2008, Alfred Josef Baldacchino, rector of the Universitas Sancti Cyrilli of Malta, conferred a Ph.D. Degree in Urban Planning to Mr. Cao at the Rome campus on December 8. As Prince Grand Master of the Ordo Byzantinus Sancti Sepulchri (OBSS), Mr. Baldacchino granted Mr. Cao Knight of the Order of Malta at Magistral Palace in Rome to encourage more professionals to contribute to social endowment and green environmental protection in terms of human settlements.
Mr. Baldacchino said Universitas Sancti Cyrilli of Malta hopes to encourage innovative ideas by awarding degrees. He praised the urban design project at Mile County, Yunnan Province, China by Mr. Cao, Vice President of Beijing Capital City Commerce&Urban Planning Design Academy, as impressive and innovative, proposing innovative ideas and methods to solve the aging problems and green environmental protection issues in the field of human settlements in China. He highlighted Cao Wei's concepts not only as a potential solution for China to solve the welfare problem of the elderly population, but also as one of the successful cases in the elderly care industry to solve the problem of population aging.
During the ceremony, Mr. Cao Wei presented his book Reshape the City’s Cultural and Natural to Prince Alfred and Giuseppe Melay, Senior Consultant of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and Senior Architect. Giuseppe Melay said that Italy attaches great importance to the protection and planning of the ancient city, with urban network mechanism and humanistic design as important aspects. The humanistic and green urban design concepts and urban planning related to the elderly care industry of Mr. Cao provided innovative ideas for the sustainable development of cities. The Aiwan Project design and the architectural works of the ring-shaped elderly community building have integrated the natural and humanistic planning and design, implying his unique interpretation in these fields.
The unique green traveling concept proposed by Cao Wei will bring new ideas to urban development. His concept of a green city is to build a comprehensive urban transportation system, a green transportation system with separated motor vehicle lanes, to end urban traffic and pollution problems. His concepts will have a major influence on future urban development and inspire new ideas.
